Notes on Reading in Public

Marginalia, but for the internet.

A short note, because the thought is short.

When I read a physical book I underline. When I read on a Kindle I highlight. When I read on the web I do nothing — and then a week later I cannot find the paragraph that mattered.

I am beginning to think the missing primitive of the web is the marginal note. Not a comment, not a reaction. A private mark. Something that says: this mattered to me, on this date, for reasons I may later forget.

A blog, in some ways, is the public form of this. You read something, and the post you write later is the underline.
